Lt. Governor André Bauer to Host Listening Session on Senior Fraud and Promote Identity Theft Protection with a Shred Day in Anderson

(Columbia, S.C.) – Lt. Governor André Bauer will host a Listening Session on Senior Fraud, Tuesday, December 9 at 2:30 p.m. at Senior Solutions, 3420 Clemson Blvd. in Anderson, S.C.

Lt. Governor Bauer will discuss the new Senior Shield program and provide information on the most common types of scams and fraud committed on seniors.  The Listening Session will also offer an opportunity for seniors and their caregivers who may be victims of fraud to share their story with Lt. Governor Bauer and his Office on Aging staff.

As a part of the day’s events, seniors will be able to bring confidential documents, files and other sensitive information for on-site shredding courtesy of Shred 360, a statewide document management company. 

The Shred 360 truck will be on-site from 2:30 - 4:00 p.m. to help protect area seniors from identity theft.  Shred 360 asks that there be a limit of five bags/boxes/bins of materials to be shredded allowing each person to be serviced in a timely manner.  No plastic, glass, trash or other non-paper contaminants are allowed for shredding.  These items must be removed prior to submitting information for shredding.

With Consumer Debt At An All-Time High, Organizations Are

Taking The Issue To The Streets of Columbia:

 

NAPFA Consumer Education Foundation, TD AMERITRADE Institutional and

Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine join forces to deliver financial education during

national bus tour stops in the City of Columbia.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL (October 30, 2008) - South Carolina residents are struggling to make ends meet right now.  Fuel prices and home foreclosures continue to impact consumers throughout the state, and increasing reliance on credit cards and missing payments can cause significant financial difficulties. 

In recognition of this growing problem, three financial industry leaders are taking the issue of debt and saving to the streets of Columbia during a national bus tour stop to deliver FREE financial advice from independent registered investment advisors and education to help consumers reverse these startling trends.

The National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA) Consumer Education Foundation, TD AMERITRADE Institutional and Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine are collaborating on the Your Money Bus Tour.  Coming to Columbia on November 25, 2008, the Your Money Bus Tour will deliver the important message that it is never too late to start taking steps to prepare for a secure financial future.

During the stop in Columbia, volunteer financial advisors will be on-hand to conduct the following events:

• 9:30 to 11:00 am - Morning presentation on “Understanding Debt, Saving and Your Financial Well-Being” at the University of South Carolina - Russell House (1400 Greene Street, Columbia, SC‎). The event is free and open to the public and will cover financial literacy, debt reduction and saving strategies.

• 12:30 to 3:00 pm - Free advice event at the Richland Public Library (1431 Assembly Street). Bring your financial questions and sit down and chat with a financial advisor to get your answers. Be sure to also pick-up a handy toolkit full of information on debt reduction and saving.

• 4:00 to 7:00 pm - Free advice event at Drew Wellness Center (2101 Walker Solomon Way). Bring your financial questions and sit down and chat with a financial advisor to get your answers. Be sure to also pick-up a handy toolkit full of information on debt reduction and saving.

“The Your Money Bus Tour is a way for our organizations to reach out to consumers in Columbia and in other cities coast-to-coast to help them make better decisions for their futures,” said Michael Joyce, CFA, CFP^®, chairman of the NAPFA Consumer Education Foundation Board.  “We hope everyone in Columbia has a chance to stop by the bus to get some free advice and pick-up some literature.  We know they will be happy they did.”

Shred 360 will be sponsoring a Shred Day event to benefit Special Olympics South Carolina on Thursday, March 20th from 8 am - 12 noon and 2 pm - 6 pm.  We will be located in the Dutch Square Mall parking lot across from Special Olympics’ Columbia office (810 Dutch Square Blvd).  For a donation of any size to Special Olympics, Shred 360 will be providing free shredding services to consumers to help them destroy confidential records that could prevent them from falling victim to identity theft.
